play a hand
To play a hand generally means that you went beyond the first betting round with the first cards you were dealt. It does not mean that you simply ante'd or posted blinds for the round.
The cards are dealt in 7-card stud and Bob leads in with a $5 bet. Behind him Tom decides not to play and folds his hand. In late position Alice decides to play and puts up the $5.
