card rank

Card rank refers to the value ordering of individual cards. A card is worth more if its rank is greater than that of another card.

A standard deck contains cards with 13 distinct ranks: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace. The face cards and ace are also sometimes expressed as their numeric rank: 11, 12, 13, 14. Numeric ranks allow direct numeric comparison of the cards.

In particular games, and in straights, the ace may be used as a low card in which case its numeric rank would be 1. This is important when determining the highest rank card for competing hands. A straight 5♥ 4♣ 3♦ 2♣ A♥ has the high rank 5, whereas A♣ K♦ Q♣ J♦ T♦ has the high rank 14.

A standard deck contains one of each rank in each of the four suits.
