protection bet

A protection bet is a bet made to declare a good hand to opponents in order to have them fold their drawing hands. The reason is to secure the pot at this time rather than risk losing it to an opponents good fortune later in the hand.

Michael has three of a kind and his opponent Sally is showing a possible flush draw. Not wanting to have his opponent make that flush Michael makes a sizeable half pot bet. Sally looks at her cards and sees the flush draw, the bet however does not give her favourable odds to chase it so she folds.
