defensive bet
A defensive bet is a small bet made by one player in hopes that it prevents another player from making a larger bet.
Defensive bets are used in cases where a player would like to see another card cheaply but is rather certain their opponent would lead in with a larger bet. The small bet eliminates the lead in possibility and effectively removes the chance for a small bluff.
Rachel has a flush draw and would really like to see the river cheaply. The player to her left, Mann, is an aggressive player who likes to bet any check. Rachel places a small 2bb defensive bet and Mann calls.
