continuation bet
A continuation bet is a bet made on the second round of betting by the player who either made the first bet, or last raise, on the first round.
The continuation bet is a very important tactical tool. It can be used to assert dominance with a weaker hand, hopefully taking the pot with several folds. It can also be used to simply pad the pot with a decent draw. If a player repeatedly makes continuation bets it is very difficult to determine whether they have made their hand or are bluffing.
In a game of hold'em Tyrone holds J♠ J♣ and raises in mid-position preflop. He has a caller to his left and right. The flop comes Q♣ 5♣ K♦. A check to him and he makes a half pot continuation bet. Both players fold.
Tyrone continues playing, making the continuation bet. He's being called only about 40% of the time so it is profitable for him. He now gets 7♠ 7♦ and bets preflop. The flop comes 7♣ K♥ A♦. He feels very comfortable that his standard continuation bet won't scare anybody away. Gregor unfortunately holds A♠ 5♠ and calls the bet.
