An opening hand, or starting hand, is the set of cards first dealt to a player before any round of betting has commenced. Each player must decide whether to play or fold these cards.

In hold'em this is the two pocket cards. In omaha the four pocket cards. In seven card stud the first three cards.

The term starting hand is more often used to refer to a particular selection of opening hands which the player would consider playing.
