Short handed play is a table with six or fewer people. The other two common words to refer to player count are long handed play and heads up play.

In contrast to a full table with many players, short handed play generally allows, if not requires, players to be looser and play more hands. This is simply a statistical result as when there are fewer players any hand has a greater chance of winning.
