flat call

A flat call refers to calling in a situation where a raise or fold might be more expected. It may also be used to emphasize the fact a player has called rather than making a raise of fold. It commonly used during the first round of betting, though is equally appropriate on further streets.

Strategically a flat call is important as it reveals very little information about the hand. That is, a player who makes a flat call may be indicating weakness, they may have a mediocre hand, or they could be slow playing. Though generally on the first round of betting the flat call is seen as a sign of weakness, and opens up the possibility of a squeeze play.

Note that a flat call does not generally refer to a call made after a raise or reraise, especially if the caller has made the original bet or raise. It may however still refer to a third player who calls the raise.

Louis bets 4BB in middle position pre-flop. The two players to his left fold and then Tim flat calls -- puts 4BB into the pot.
