bad beat

A player who is a strong favourite in a hand but nonetheless loses to a lucky draw by another player is said to have suffered a bad beat. The other player made a suckout in this case. Both suckout and bad beat refer to the same situation, but tend to refer to differences in perception: the winner made the suckout and the loser suffered the bad beat.

John has hit a monster flop, a pocket of A♠ K♠ on a flop of Q♣ T♦ J♥. He unfortunately got only Nancy to call his preflop bet. That isn't so bad however since she is a very aggressive player. Thus he simply checks to her. He is however surprised that she over bets at 1.5 pot. John thinks he might be lucky and that Nancy may have hit a set, so he reraises and Nancy goes all-in. Rather than a set she shows J♦ 8♦, giving John a 92% chance of winning. John's joy is however quashed as the turn and river come 3♦ 4♦ giving Nancy a flush. A bad beat for John.
