underbet

An underbet is a bet which is unusually small given the situation. The intent is to encourage more people to keep playing by offering high pot odds. It is the opposite of an overbet.

Regan holds A♥ T♣ and the flop is Q♦ K♥ J♣, giving her the nut straight. Even without a straight a high pair might warrant a sizeable bet here. She could slowplay by checking, but her opponents are very passive and won't likely bet. Regan chooses to make a significant underbet at a fifth of the pot.
