nut straight

The nut straight is the best possible straight in a given game given the current cards. Normally this is the ace-high straight, or broadway straight, but needn't be in many situations.

In a game of hold'em the flop and turn are showing 4♦ 8♦ 6♣ A♠. At this moment the best possible straight that a player can have is Eight-High, if they hold 75. If the river however shows a 9♣ the nut straight becomes Ten-High to a player with T7.
