advertise

To advertise is to intentionally play a weak hand to showdown. The intent of advertising is to give the other players at the table a false representation of your playing abilities. This in turn sets them up to make mistakes against you in a further round.

A hold'em board is showing several straigh and flush draws, as well as many high cards. There has been heavy betting and Margie makes a bet on the river. Her opponent, Sammy, calls and show a straight and she turns up only mid-pair. She has advertised herself as a poor player. In a later game the same situation comes up and Margie makes an even larger bet on the river. Though Sammy only has a king-high straight, vulnerable to the obvious ace-high straight or flush, he assumes that Margie would easily bet a pair, two pair, or even three of a kind here. So Sammy calls and Margie shows a flush to take the pot. Had Margie not advertised herself as a poor player before Sammy might likely had folded.
