average stack size
In a tournament the average stack size is the total number of all chips (allocated at buy-in) divided by the number of players remaining in the tournament. Where an individual stands in relation to this average size is a good indicator of his health in the tournament.
At tournament start 100 people entered and were allocated 200 chips each. That means there are 20000 chips total. At the mid-way point there are 50 players left, thus the average stack size is 20000 / 50 = 400 chips. At final table of 9 players the average stack size grows to 20000 / 9 = 2222 chips. A player with only 300 chips at that point is not in good shape, whereas a player with over 4000 chips is in good standing.
