At the mid-way point there are 50 players left, thus the average stack size is 20000 / 50 = 400 chips. At final table of 9 players the average stack size grows to 20000 / 9 = 2222 chips. A player with only 300 chips at that point is not in good shape, whereas a player with over 4000 chips is in good standing.
