The Godfather of Poker - Doyle Brunson

Doyle Brunson is without doubt the most widely known poker celebrity in the world. Doyle has been an integral part of the modern poker scene from its beginnings in the late 20th century through today. His exploits at and away from the table are things of legend. From playing sports to betting on them; from robbers and hijackings to dealers and gunfights; from good fortune to agony: This autobiography gives but a glimpse into Doyle's extraordinary life!

Entering Doyle's life at a very early age, the story starts in the Texas countryside. There he lives with his family and attends a tiny local school. The descriptions point to a relatively normal life, but oft foreshadow grander things to come. While childhood in a small town seem simple and carefree, he also has strong aspirations. Knowing who Doyle eventually became it is hard to reckon that his dreams were to play basketball! His success became so great in this area that it is difficult to anticipate how the switch to gambling even happened!

Despite all the years which have passed Doyle Brunson is able to bring a vivid detail to his memories. Strong recollection of situations and a fond memory of friends weaves a very endearing tale. It's those friends who form a constant thread through the tale. In particular his core group of poker friends serve as the major characters alongside Doyle himself. Now while some of the tales do strain one's credulity, the overall story still feels like a fair reflection of his life.

The story proper completes about two thirds through the book. Beyond that Doyle covers many more anecdotes from his life, but no longer in a clear chronological order. Though all these stories are interesting in their own right, there is no longer a feeling of progression. It would have been nicer if these latter components were better combined with the main story line.

Still, this is an excellent recounting of the life of an extremely interesting man. Doyle Brunson's story should fascinate even those foreign to the poker scene. Obviously poker plays a great role in his life, but the story is about the people, and what an extraordinary group of people they are. Highly recommended for any reader.
