drawing dead

Drawing dead indicates that a player would be unable to get any card to give them a winning hand. In particular when a player has a drawing hand, gets the card they need, but still lose to a higher valued hand.

The expression is often heard in televised poker as the announcers have more information than the players. That is, the player who is drawing dead does not likely know it.

Manuel holds K♠ T♥ and Mim holds A♠ 3♠. The flop comes 2♠ 7♠ T♠. At this point Manuel is drawing thin as he would need a runner runner to beat the flush. If the turn comes up other than a ten or king he would be drawing dead, as there is no more possibility to beat the flush. Another spade on the turn would likely be very costly to Manuel, since a king-high flush is normally a very strong hand in hold'em.
