A free card refers to a card dealt after a betting round in which there was no action. That is, nobody put money into the pot, thus the next card is free.
The flop shows 9♥ 6♠ 4♦. Greg has A♥ K♠ and his opponent, a player who reraised him pre-flop, has checked. Greg doesn't like the situation and feels as though it is a check-raise trap. He decides to check as well and take his free card.
