position
Position refers to where a player is sitting relative to the button. Position is a key strategy criteria as it decides the betting order for the players.
Players are typically indicated as being in early, middle, or late position. In a nine player table the first three players to the left of the dealer are in early position, the next three in middle position, and the last three in late position.
Many of the positions at a table have specific terms referring to them.
- small blind - first player left of the dealer
- big blind - player immediately to the left of the small blind
- under the gun - the first player to act, one to the left of the big blind in hold'em
- hijack - two to the right of the dealer
- cutoff - player immediately to the right of the dealer
- button - the dealer
