A scare card is any card dealt face up which gives some player a reasonable possibility of having completed a strong hand. Which cards qualify as scare cards depends on the particular game as well as the players, pot, and betting.

Scare cards have strong influence on the betting in round in which the card appeared. A player who has made their hand may choose to slow-play whereas a player in position may choose to push people out with a bluff.
