tell

A tell is an action by a player that inadvertently reveals something about their hand. This action may be the size of a bet, the timing, a spoken comment, or a physical behaviour. A player who can pick up on another's tell is said to have a read on that player.

Sanjeev is an extremely tight player. Yan, sitting to his right, is a rather loose player who loves to steal the blinds. Normally Yan puts in 3 or 4 big blinds when he wishes to steal, but sometimes Sanjeev sees a 5 or 6 BB bet. Watching how those hands have played out Sanjeev realizes that Yan is making the higher bet when he has a premium hand and is hoping to catch somebody who thinks who's trying to steal again. This high bet is a good tell revealing when Yan has a premium hand.
