trap

A trap is an action by one player which is intended to invoke an incorrect action on the part of another player. The first player is said to have setup a trap in such situations.

Miika has pocket nines and called a preflop raise to see a flop of 9♣ T♠ A♠. Norman puts in a pot size bet and Miika can only assume he has a flush and straight draw so calls with his set. The turn comes up 9♠ and Norman checks. Miika assumes Norman has made his flush, likely King high, and is setting up his own trap, a check raise. Miika obliges and sets up his own trap by putting in a half-pot bet. Norman takes the bait and raises pot.
